When it comes to mac ‘n’ cheese, it ain’t easy being cheesy. Picking a favorite is simply a matter of preference — classic, crusted, five cheese, fun flavors and so on. We have the rundown on finding this classic comfort food around Detroit. Try not to dig in and devour.

  1. Slows Bar BQ | 2318 Michigan Ave., Detroit, MI 48216
Man v. Food’s Adam Richman considers Slows Bar BQ’s dish a “truly life-changing experience.” Its pasta shell base, creamy béchamel sauce, cayenne, salt and pepper and cheddar cheese make it to die for. The final touch includes grated cheddar on top, broiled to a crisp.

  2. Mac Shack | Eastern Market
If you’re an adventurous mac ‘n’ cheeser, you have to try Detroit’s Mac Shack. Originally launched at Eastern Market, this food truck offers everything from finger-lickin’ fried mac ‘n’ cheese balls and five cheese blends to beef brisket gravy, wild mushrooms and fried egg atop a bed of cheesy noodles. You’ll have to visit the website and check the schedule, but we promise the tasty truck is worth chasing around town.

  3. Clarkston Union | 54 S. Main St., Clarkston, MI 48346
Clarkston Union boasts “the most macked mac ‘n’ cheese.” You’ll be instantly happy after your first bite of the legendary mac. Vermont sharp cheddar, mild Pinconning cheese layered with penne rigate and a crunchy crust make this dish the cornerstone of comfort. Head to nearby Berkley for a taste of the same recipe at Vinsetta Garage.

  4. Cliff Bell’s | 2030 Park Ave., Detroit, MI 48226
If you love your mac the way grandma used to make it, then Cliff Bell’s has the home-style recipe you’re looking for. Made with Vermont cheddar and domestic Brie, classic spices including nutmeg and sea salt and topped with crushed Ritz crackers, this mac has all the familiar flavor of your favorite dish with a little flare.

  5. Sweet Lorraine’s Fabulous Mac n’ Cheez | 100 Renaissance Center, Detroit, MI 48243
Sweet Lorraine’s is not your mama’s mac ‘n’ cheese, that’s for sure. With variations such as pepperoni pizza, cheeseburger deluxe, Philly cheesesteak and Cajun shrimp, plus six cheeses and dozens of toppings, this made-to-order macaroni kitchen truly is Fabulous. There are locations all over metro Detroit, but head to the Renaissance Center for a quick pick-up!

  6. Roast | 1128 Washington Blvd., Detroit, MI 48226
You may have heard about Roast, considered to be one of Detroit’s finest steakhouses. Iron Chef Michael Symon creates top-notch and trendy meat entrees, but his mac ‘n’ cheese gets just as much attention. Why? This tangy pasta dish comes to life with the untraditional inclusion of goat cheese, among a mixture of simple spices. Forget the cheddar! Try something new.
