All Hands on Deck for New Detroit Navy Ship

Posted on Wednesday, October 05 2016 in Events

USS Detroit

The Navy's newest and fastest ship is the USS Detroit. The ship is headed to The D for its Oct. 22 commissioning — the official transfer of the warship from the ship builder to the United States Navy — surrounded by eight days of celebrations. This is the first time a Navy warship will be commissioned in Detroit. Here's how you can be part of this historic event:

Oct. 14
USS Detroit Arrival
Wear your red, white and blue and join the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) on the Detroit Riverwalk to wave flags and greet USS Detroit when she arrives. The ship will dock at the pier directly behind the GM Renaissance Center Wintergarden. There is a 12 hour arrival window due to operation security and weather factors. Arrival time will be updated closer to the date.

Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Veterans Day with USS Detroit Crew
Veterans can meet USS Detroit's crew and learn about the capabilities of the ship. Limited free tickets for Veterans Day in The D are now available for veterans only.

Oct. 19 from 1-5 p.m.
Public Tours
Free public tours of the ship will be offered Oct. 19 on a first come, first served basis from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets are not required. All guests must have photo ID. Be sure to wear safe, comfortable shoes. (No high heels, ladies!) Slacks are also recommended due to shipboard ladders. Check the Facebook page for a complete list of important tour details and restrictions. Note: All group tour openings are filled.

Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
USS Detroit Youth Day
The Michigan Science Center, USS Detroit and USS Detroit Commissioning Committee will offer Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) based Navy programming and demonstrations. The ship's Commanding Officer and crew members will attend and a virtual tour of the ship will be live-streamed. Call 313-577-8400 for school group reservations and additional information.

Oct. 22 at 11 a.m.
Commissioning Ceremony

The Commissioning Ceremony, which marks the Navy's acceptance of the ship, takes place Oct. 22 at 11 a.m. A post-commissioning reception and tour follows. Unfortunately, general admission tickets went fast and the waiting list is also full. Sponsorships, which comes with tickets, are still available, so you could still score a spot if your company is involved with the event.

About the Ship
The USS Detroit is the sixth Naval warship to be named Detroit. It is primary designed for coastal waters, but is also equipped for open seas and can travel as fast as 45 knots (52 mph). Designed for fighting, the ship may also be used for antisubmarine warfare, humanitarian missions, and landing small groups of Marines.

Swag to Mark the Occasion
Unique Expressions is the only licensee for official USS Detroit merchandise, and will have a storefront dedicated to these products. A portion of the proceeds will support the store's volunteer efforts. Merchandise will be available at the newly opened store on Woodward Avenue and 9 mile or online.
