The Best Italian Restaurants in Detroit | Mangia Italiana

Posted on Tuesday, April 10 2012 in Dining

Italian dining in Metro Detroit is as diverse as the country itself. Diners can experience tastes from northern Italy, the bright flavors of Tuscany, the rich tastes of Rome, the Mediterranean fusion of Sicily or Americanized versions of Italian staples.  Here’s a list of some of Detroit’s best Italian restaurants that will have you cleaning your plate and saying Grazie.

Roma Café
3401 Riopelle St. | Detroit | 313-831-5940
In downtown Detroit’s historic Eastern Market, it’s the oldest Italian restaurant in Detroit, dating back to 1890. Owner Jan Sossi offers a classic Italian-American menu with big flavors and big portions with no holding back on the butter. Hearty pastas, seafood, steak and vegetarian options make Roma Café a must-stop on your Italian tour of Detroit.

Giovanni’s Ristorante
330 S. Oakwood Blvd. | Detroit | 313-841-0122
Off the beaten path on Oakwood Boulevard in southwest Detroit, Givoanni’s Ristorante offers an authentic and delicious Italian experience. Italian staples like minestrone soup and Caesar salad with fresh ribbons of parmesan lead into a variety of entrees featuring veal, chicken, seafood and pasta. The pasta is made on-site and is prepared a perfect al-dente. Be sure to save room for a homemade cannoli.

Bucci Risorante
20217 Mack Ave. | Grosse Pointe Woods | 313-882-1044
Bucci’s open kitchen is a stage on which the cooks whip up signature dishes like the Shrimp Casablanca and Eggplant Parmigiana. Chef/owner Bujar Mamuslari offers a well-edited menu and wine list that reflects his years of European training and his ability to offer dishes that bear little similarity to the typical heavily sauced offerings found in many other Italian restaurants.

Luciano’s Restaurant
39091 Garfield Road | Clinton Township | 586-263-6540
This is where Italians go when they want to eat Italian. Owned and operated by the Gianino family for 20-plus years, the Old World décor and fast and friendly service will make you feel right at home. The star of Luciano’s is the sauce – the meat sauce is just right, the Alfredo is light and perfectly seasoned and the marinara is to die for. Fresh and simple ingredients make the taste the featured attraction.
