Shop till You Drop at Downtown Detroit Boutiques
It was a sunny Saturday afternoon when a family stopped me on the street as I was heading into my downtown apartment. Decked out in their Detroit Tigers gear for the game later that day they asked me, “Is there any place to shop around here?”
Though Detroit doesn’t have a Magnificent Mile (yet!), there are plenty of boutique shops in the area to explore whether you’re killing time before a ball game, stopping in after work or looking for an all-day shopping adventure. Here are a few store suggestions I shared with this family:

of many made-to-order tees at
Goods T-Shirt Bakery
The Detroit Shoppe: At this shop along Woodward Avenue you’ll find a wide range of items for sale from Detroit brand staples like Faygo, Saunders and Motown, as well as artwork, clothing and much more. For more Made in Detroit products, be sure to head around the corner to Pure Detroit inside the beautiful Guardian Building.
The Peacock Room: Located inside the historic Park Shelton building, the ladies will love the Peacock Room’s wide collection of new and vintage women's consignment apparel and accessories. From clothing and jewelry to handbags, scarves, hats and more, there’s much to love about this fashionable boutique shop.
Goods T-Shirt Bakery & Gifts: What exactly is a T-shirt bakery you ask? Imagine a bakery, but instead of sweets along the glass counter you’ll find customizable shirts in all colors, sizes and styles. Goods offers made-to-order tees, hoodies, bags, kids clothes, pet gear and more personalized by you and made while you wait. You’ll also find paper goods, art and more from local artists.
City Bird & Nest: These two sister shops located on Canfield are home to more Detroit- and Michigan-themed items than you can count. At City Bird you’ll find gifts, jewelry, apparel and art, while Nest offers house wares, sundries and other for-the-home items. And be sure to pick up a copy of Belle Isle to 8 Mile: An Insider’s Guide to Detroit while you’re there. It’s an unmatched guidebook to the city’s best-known landmarks and best-kept secrets.
Sassy Fashion Couture: Located inside the Millender Center on Jefferson Avenue, this shop is a quick People Mover ride away for downtown visitors. Sassy Fashion offers an eclectic collection of women’s jewelry, clothes (petite, plus size and junior), makeup, shoes, accessories and novelty items.
What are some of your other favorite downtown boutique shops? Where else do you like to shop in The D?
