10 Popular Places to Slurp Soup in Metro Detroit
Like Master Chef Louis P. De Gouy says, "Good soup is one of the prime ingredients of good living." Luckily, especially with our seemingly long winter months, metro Detroiters have many tempting options. Here are 10 (of many other) places to warm up and get a scrumptious bowl of soup in and around Detroit:
In The D:
1. Granite City
According to its website, Granite City is passionate about "creating fresh menu items from scratch," and, luckily, this includes soup. Detroit's Granite City, located inside of the Renaissance Center, offers guests the choice of its Northern Cheddar & Ale (creamy cheddar cheese soup simmered with The Northern beer), its Baked French Onion (caramelized onions in a rich beef wine stock, smothered under melted provolone cheese) or its Soup of the Day, which can be anything from Chicken Noodle to Clam Chowder to even Steak & Black Bean Chili. Craving Granite City's soup but not in the city? No problem! Its Northville and Troy locations offer similar menus.
2. Lunchtime Global
Located in the First National Building, Lunchtime Global is definitely a favorite lunch spot in The D; however, many don't realize that it offers 12 (on average) soup options each day, including off-the-wall yet delicious flavors such as Cheesy Jalapeno Tater, Ranch-Style Chicken Noodle, Vegan Hot'n'Sour and many more.
3. Johnny Noodle King
If you're up for something satisfying and warm but not really feeling the "traditional" bowl of soup, check out Johnny Noodle King on Fort Street. Its menu has a "Brothed" section that offers a variety of Japanese-inspired dishes, including Chicken Pho, Red Curry, Smoked Duck Udon and Veggie Miso, as well as other flavors and styles from around the world.
4. Russell Street Deli
Russell Street Deli, located inside of Eastern Market, happily serves "made-to-order soups, sandwiches and specials with options for all dietary types." They feature a wide variety of house-made vegan, vegetarian and meat soups daily, many of which can be purchased at grocery stores all over metro Detroit.
5. Genitti's Hole-in-the-Wall
If you've never been to Genitti's in Northville, you're missing out on a true Italian experience. The seven-course, family-style dinner features a lot of food, starting with its amazing, homemade Italian wedding soup. The soup is then followed by pasta, antipasto salad, Italian sausage with green peppers and onions, Italian steak with potatoes, baked chicken with zucchini and, finally, a cannoli for dessert.
6. Inn Season
According to its website, Royal Oak's Inn Season Café is known as the "premier vegan/vegetarian restaurant in Michigan." Its soups are original recipes that are made with fresh herbs and cooked in healthy oils. Every day there is a Daily Soup Special offered, as well as Budapest Mushroom, a seasonal Chili and a seasonal Gazpacho.
7. Market North End
Does Garlic Soup, Lentil Soup or Chickpea Stew make your mouth water? If so, visit Market North End, an American restaurant in Birmingham that serves a variety of "good home cooking."
8. Polish Kitchen
Located in Rochester Hills, Val's Polish Kitchen offers traditional Polish soups, such as Chicken Dumpling, Chicken Noodle, Cabbage and Dill Pickle every day, as well as a rotating soup menu, as well. It's closed Mondays but open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday.
"Good soup is one of the prime ingredients of good living."
-Chef Louis P. De Gouy
All of the house-made soups at SOUPDIVE in Southfield are gluten-free except chicken noodle (because of the noodles); they are made from scratch (thus free of toxic chemicals) and include the finest ingredients.
10. Stage Deli
Stage Deli on Orchard Lake in West Bloomfield is a definite go-to for soup. There is a rotating Soup of the Day in addition to its daily offers, including Classic Chicken, Country Chicken Noodle, Mushroom Barley, Matzo Ball, Kreplach, Mish Mash, French Onion, Beet Borscht Deluxe, Spicy Chili and Diet Cabbage. If you're interested in pairing your soup with a sandwich or salad, there are many combination menu choices, as well.
No matter the season, freelance writer Danielle Alexander loves a good bowl of soup. (She also loves how many vegetables can be snuck into a bowl of soup without her almost two-year-old realizing!)
