What to Expect When Youmacon Comes to Detroit
Fantasy will become reality when Youmacon 2015 comes to downtown Detroit next month.
So what the heck is Youmacon? Well, it’s a popular culture event similar to most “comic cons.” However, instead of focusing on comic books, it celebrates Japanese pop culture and its influence on our own culture over the past few decades.
Costumes, Celebrities and Costumed Celebrities
The four-day event — scheduled from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1 at both Cobo Center and the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center — will bring an all-ages mix of interactive events, celebrity guest panels and live musical performances. Festivities will take place around the clock, beginning at 8 p.m. on Thursday evening and going through 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Wearing costumes, or “cosplay” as it’s known at conventions, is very popular with Youmacon attendees. So don’t be surprised if you pass a pair of Italian plumbers in overalls then meet someone dressed as the Master Chief from Halo minutes later.
More than 30 anime industry celebrities and special guests are expected, including actors, producers, musicians, artists and more. Get the complete list of special guests.
Tickets and Hotel Accommodations
Tickets will be available at the door for cash only. Options include a three-day pass ($60) or Friday-only ($30), Saturday-only ($40) or Sunday-only ($20) passes. Thursday evening’s activities are free and open to the public.
The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center is Youmacon 2015’s official event hotel, with overflow rooms available at The Westin Book Cadillac, Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites – Downtown Detroit and Greektown Casino-Hotel.
