I’m not complaining, mind you; this bubble has lakes abound and a reputation as a destination for foodies and wine connoisseurs alike. But a bubble it is nonetheless. To the typical Traverse City native, Detroit is an airport and the occasional place you visit to see a Tigers game or a concert, but it’s certainly not a vacation destination. After two of our resident Traverse City feature writers at The Awesome Mitten moved there recently, I’ve been bombarded with things we need to feature and places I “ABSOLUTELY” have to check out. So a weekend trip was planned.

Detroit is a great sports town—there’s no doubt about that. Detroit is also a great sports bar town. We fill our stadiums for Red Wings, Lions, Tigers and Pistons games, and when the stadiums are full the fans spill out into local watering holes to cheer on their favorite teams. There’s camaraderie on Detroit’s barstools. If tickets to the big game are sold out, not to worry—there’s a seat for you at one of Detroit’s top sports bars.

Baseball fans coming to Detroit for the World Series this weekend won’t have any problems finding things to do before and after the games.  “We hope fans coming to Detroit for the World Series take the opportunity to explore our world-class museums, eat in our delicious restaurants, take a walk along our revitalized riverfront, and check out everything that our city has to offer,” said Larry Alexander, Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau President & CEO. “We know baseball will be top of mind this weekend, but there are so many other things to see and do in Detroit before and after the games.”
