They’re civilized. They’re sophisticated. They’re craft cocktails. Detroit is not immune to the mixology trend that has swept the nation over the past few years.

These specialty concoctions require passion, patience, creativity, attention to detail and sometimes five or more ingredients to prepare. Tools of the trade may include eye droppers, test tubes and even blow torches. The end results are often magical.

Some stories are best delivered over a craft cocktail. If you’re looking for a place to tell your tale, you’ll find the masters of mixology at these fine local establishments:

How Sweet It is

Sugar House in Corktown is a speakeasy dedicated to quality, inspired libations. Watching the meticulous preparation of the drinks is a form of entertainment in itself. Peruse the cornucopia of a cocktail menu or allow yourself to be pleasantly surprised when you allow your bartender to mix you up something special based on your preferences. The bar’s punch service is a bonding opportunity for groups.

Bonus points: Sugar House is in close proximity to the ever-popular Slow’s BarBQ, making it an ideal stop before or after dinner.

Naming Names

Michael Symon's Roast is a swanky, award-winning restaurant in downtown’s Westin Book Cadillac Detroit hotel. When you start your night off with drinks like “I Cherish U” and “Promises You Never Kept”, how can you go wrong?

Suburban Bliss

At Toasted Oak Grill & Market in Novi, an impressive array of craft cocktails emphasizes fresh ingredients, as do the dishes on the restaurant’s regionally sourced menu. Stop at the Toasted Oak’s market to take home wine, cheeses, baked goods and gift baskets.

The “bar chefs” at Ocean Prime in Troy are well versed in the science of mixology. The restaurant is self-labeled as a “modern American supper club” and the description is right on the mark.

You’ll want to sit down for this!

The Oakland Art Novelty Company in Ferndale maintains a spacious, comfortable and upscale atmosphere for its patrons. Calling ahead is recommended, as you must be seated to be served. A dozen original cocktail recipes are posted online, so YES, you CAN try this at home! Cheers!

What is the most exotic craft cocktail ingredient you’ve come across?
